What is a Chicago Screw? (I readily admit that I’m not the person who comes up with these names). A Chicago Screw is a hollow “pipe-like” tube that goes through a hole in a cover and paper to hold the paper together. At the top of the “tube” there is a small “slot style” screw head & the bottom of the tube is a solid “cap”. Both the “slotted screw head” and the “cap” bottom are wider than the “tube”, to hold the paper together. The measurement of the “TUBE” is from ¼” in length to 5”!
As you see from our pictures they can be added to or almost unlimited range of cover styles, sizes thicknesses and materials.
The commonest colour is aluminum followed by copper colour, bronze and steel grey. Other colours such as red, green etc. are very rare and therefore hard to source and expensive.
A Chicago Screw book can be taken apart by simply putting a dime in the top slot, holding the bottom in your other hand and twisting. Presto! You can add and subtract sheets very easily with a Chicago Screw book.
For very thick books, such as 4 or 5 inch thick the book doesn’t open very well. Our SOLUTION is to exchange the threaded tube for a spring. We glue the cap into the bottom of the spring & thread the “slot cap” into the opposite end of the spring. This allows the “spine” of the book to form a half circle when opened & it is much easier to read.
