Trade Die Cutting for Book Covers!

Trade die cutting isn’t just for tags, packaging, folders, stickers, etc. It also makes a great addition to books – for soft cover books, exposed chipboard covers and interior pages!

Die Cutting a book cover turns a simple piece into a work of art. A windowed book cover allows the reader to see inside a section of the cover. We can cut a decorative shape relevant to the book’s topic or product being promoted – the choice is yours.

The book I’m featuring this week has a die cut windowed cover that is also case wrapped! First, the chipboard cover material has a window die cut. Then, the cover was mounted to the fabric, with special care taken to wrap the inside of each of the window sides.

The image above shows how the inside cover liner hides the fabric edges that have been folded over the die cut window edges.

As I mention in this video, we love multiple operation projects. The piece featured was made in six stages– done all in-house! The die cutting portion of this Document Box Folder project is pretty standard, followed by full-surface gluing of the panel.

Choosing the right magnet for this capacity folder, however, was not overly simple because magnets come in a range of sizes and strengths. If the magnet pull is too soft, the flap will open. If the magnet pull is too strong, the flap will bend when the user tries to open the folder. We have a full range of magnets in different pull strengths, which makes prototype testing easy for our customers.

The die cut sheets are formed into a high-capacity wallet folder on our box gluing machines and then the flap is folded. Our machines can form the box pockets automatically up to 1 inch thick.

Brochure Holders Produced Automatically

The die cut Brochure Holder I’m featuring is functional, durable and extremely easy to use. Customers can successfully promote their products with these Brochure Holders. Brochures and pamphlets are held securely in the tray.

This design is particularly cost effective because it is a single die cut piece and no hand-labour was required to prepare it in production. The entire piece was produced automatically!

Shipped flat, this particular Brochure Holder design is easy for the end user to assemble.

Die Cut Hang Holes

As a premier full-service bindery, we offer customers in-house die cutting for retail packaging. We produce a range of hang holes as per client instructions. As you can see in this week’s video, there is a huge range of hang hole styles and sizes.

For a product to fit retail display hooks and hang properly, the hang hole style, size and placement have to be precise. Take a look at the images below to get an idea of how important die cut hang holes are to the retail packaging design process.

Some kinds of retail products require offset hang holes to help the product hang evenly.

A Butterfly Hole is mostly used to display small, light retail products. This kind of hang hole is versatile because it fits both single-prong display hooks and Euro-style loop hooks.

Some merchandise may require triple product hanger holes.

This double offset butterfly hang hole is very unusual, we can die cut any required holes for customers.

The open hang hole style makes it easier to lift merchandise off hooks.

This type of die cut hang hole is unique and serves two functions. The hole is both a hang hole and a handle!

Die Cutting – 6 Step Die Cut Envelope

Die Cutting is just one of the services we provide, and we do it all in-house. This reduces the time required to complete jobs, so we can often accommodate tight turnarounds.

The Tear-Strip Envelope featured in the email arrived in our plant printed on 10pt stock. We took the 28” x 40” sheets from start to finish in 6 operations:

1. Die cutting the sheet

2. Folding the two long, narrow side flaps

3. Folding the large panel from the bottom up

4. Our box gluers applied a plastic tear strip and Kleen Stik double-sided tape all in-line.

5. Folding and gluing a full-sized pocket panel

6. Folding and gluing the folder closed

We can produce highly unusual Saddle Stitched books that have multiple foldouts!

Most binderies can do 6pg foldout covers on Saddle Stitched books, but only a few (like us!) can also add foldouts from the top and/or bottom and/or face.

These operations require die-cutting, oftentimes some very tricky folding and then Saddle Stitching. We can do all these processes in-house, using one of our 4 – 40” Bobst/Brausse die cutters, box gluers, buckle/plow folders and Mueller saddle stitchers.

PMC High Die Shaped Books

This week, the focus is on books that are PMC / High Die Shaped into any shape—baby bottle, animal, fruit, etc. All the books shown in the video started out as typical perfect bound books. The Wire-O books shown above were bound, had the spine cut off and were Wire-O punched. Then, the books were PMC / High Die Shaped and then the wire was applied.

The ice cream book above started as a simple perfect bound book, which was shaped by our PMC machine.

The rivet book shown above also started as a perfect bound book. The spine was cut off, had a hole drilled, went into a PMC / High Die Shaping machine and then, finally, had the rivet inserted.

The board books below were bound in the normal way, then simple PMC /high die shaped as pictured.

Lock Bottom Beverage Holders

The product I’m showing in this email is die-cut Collapsible Beverage Carriers. This type of carrier ships flat but has a bottom that “locks” into place when erected. The end-user simply squeezes two sides together to erect the carrier, which is sturdy enough to carry between 2 and 6 beverage bottles or cans. The patent for this type of locking bottom lapsed years ago and is also referred to as a Hymes bottom, lock bottom or crash bottom.

We easily produce Collapsible Beverage Carriers with all operations done in-house. In addition, to die-cutting, we can also add pressure-sensitive labels in line during the box gluing process (see below).

CAPACITY FOLDER WITH MAGNETIC CLOSURE

Look at these beautiful Capacity Folders! They’ve been debossed, foil stamped and have hidden magnetic closures. When your client is looking for a folder that will stand out on a desk, we can help!

These two Capacity Folders each required a total 5 finishing operations in our shop:

Debossing
Foil Stamping
Die Cutting
Gluing
Magnet Application

CAPACITY FOLDER

The customer supplied blank 16pt stock, which we debossed on one of our 4 – 40” clamshell die cutters. Next, we foil stamped the flat sheets on one of our 2 – 31” Heidelberg cylinder presses. Third, the sheets went through our a 40” Brausse die cutter to be cut to shape. Finally, because this was a small run, each Capacity Folder was hand glued and had two magnets applied to each closure flap.

If this job was a much larger quantity, we could have produced it automatically on one of our box gluers.

TEAR-STRIP POSTER MAILER

TEAR-STRIP POSTER MAILER

The Tear-strip Mailer featured in this email unfolds to large 28×40 sheet. The tear strip was die cut and then we folded the Mailer on one of our 44” x 80” folding machines. Lastly, we plow folded the final fold over flap and line glued the Mailer closed.
