Fan Binding

These two pictures illustrate a binding style called “Fan Binding”, which is one of the unusual methods we use.  Very few companies that do hardback case bound books do fan binding, fan binding simply explained is a stack of single sheets, they’re bent in the bottom to one side over glue roller. The glue creeps up 16th of an inch more or less on one side of the paper, and then the pile of paper is fed the other direction and fed over another glue roller again put in the glue up the other side of the paper slightly.

After the book is dried it’s in case in. The benefit of this particular process is that if the sheets are coated or not, they’re held together more than they would be with non-environmentally, friendly hotmelt perfect binding glue.  Secondly with perfect binding the edges are grind off and roughed.  Here the edges are guillotine cut and unground.  When the book is opened it lays reasonably flat.  This method for single sheets, in my opinion is the most durable binding I can imagine.

So if you have a book requiring hardback case binding, but has single sheets coated or uncoated, and you want something that’s innovative and secure, environmentally friendly, please call us.

Fan Binding

Fan binding as you can see in the video below, the single sheets are fanned two ways and run over the surface of a glue roller.

The glue “creeps” up both sides of the paper, about 1/8 inch on each side of the sheets.  This process is MUCH more durable than regular perfect bound books.

The “fan-glued” pages can then have a cover applied or the “fan-glued” pages can be glued into a hard cover, resulting in a hardback/case bound book..
