Unlock Personalization Excellence with Ludlow Stamping for Your Hardback Books
In the dynamic world of bookbinding and finishing, the ability to personalize hardback books has taken center stage. Imagine having the names of personnel in various sizes, typefaces, and colors adorning your books—truly a bespoke touch. At our binding and finishing company, we bring a unique perspective to personalization, especially through a process called “Ludlow” stamping, a technique that has stood the test of time for over 150 years.
The Ludlow Stamping Advantage: When it comes to personalization, the Ludlow stamping technique offers unparalleled flexibility and precision. We can personalize hardback books with up to 3000 different names, each varying in size, font, and color. The Ludlow machine, a testament to craftsmanship, creates lead type for individual names like John Doe, ensuring a distinctive and elegant appearance on the book cover.
Seamless Foil Stamping: In our commitment to providing high-quality and cost-effective personalization options, we’ve seamlessly integrated Ludlow stamping into our processes. Unlike traditional methods that involve debossing or embossing impressions on the book cover, Ludlow stamping employs foil to create a sleek and refined appearance. This not only enhances the visual appeal but also allows us to offer a remarkable 80% cost savings on a per-unit basis for foil stamping on a run of 3000 names.
Quality Beyond Tradition: While Ludlow stamping is a 150-year-old process, our implementation ensures that the quality surpasses traditional standards. The precision and attention to detail in Ludlow stamping make each personalized name stand out with clarity and finesse. The result is a level of quality that not only pays homage to the rich history of Ludlow stamping but also meets the demands of modern aesthetics.
Cost-Effective Personalization: Choosing Ludlow stamping for personalized, individual names on the front of your hardback book not only ensures top-notch quality but also provides a cost-effective solution. The substantial reduction in per-unit pricing for a run of 3000 names makes Ludlow stamping an attractive choice for publishers and authors seeking both excellence and efficiency.

Eyelet
One of the benefits of buying a book is with eyelets and then case bound to make it absolutely indestructible. No the eyelet doesn’t allow the pages to lie as flat as it would with smyth sewing or perfect binding, etc. Eyelets have different diameters, different thickness, and you can see from this chart of phenomenal range of colours. Often somebody wants an elastic size closure to go around the head and foot of a hardback case bound book and high percentage of these are bound in the back with eyelets. Some people want a clash in colour e.g., the covers orange and they want the eyelet green. Other clients want the eyelet to be the same colour as the cover or the strap.
Eyelets
In previous blogs, I’ve described some unusual ways to bind books with buttons (Rollabind), elastic bands and metal bolts. This week’s focus is on a binding style which is a little more common – books bound with metal eyelets!
The following pictures show eyelets of different colours, dimensions and thicknesses. Books bound with eyelets are bound permanently; sheets cannot re added or removed. The eyelets come in a wide range of colours. The most common colours by a wide margin are copper, silver, black and white. Other colours can sometimes require a longer delivery time.
Features
- Always round with scores of different rims or edge styles
- Smooth
- Wide range of colours
Benefits
- Very durable
- Unusual, distinctive and memorable
- Eyelets colours can be coordinated with printed copy
- Permanent
- Eyelet booklets can sometimes be inserted in ring binders
Factors to Consider
- Eyelet bound books are more expensive than flat stitched or saddle stitched and perfect binding styles of binding
- Maximum thickness is 3/8”
- Certain diameters, thicknesses and colours are always quickly available
GIANT DECORATIVE GROMMETS
GIANT DECORATIVE GROMMETS
Grommets are purely functional pieces added to reinforce holes made in paper or fabric. Are they just functional or can they be something more? This week, I’m showing you examples of how we use Grommets to elevate otherwise basic, perfect bound books to unique, memorable pieces!
We start with pre-bound books (e.g. perfect bound) up to 1/4” thick, and add one, two or three Decorative Grommets along the spine. Grommets are available in a range of diameters, flanges and colours.
As you can see, they’re very distinctive and really add that special something to the look of a book. If your client wants something highly unusual, give us a call!
