original text:
We often gild or stain books on the three sides of the open pages like for instance Bibles. That’s very common, silver and gold, but this one is much different. Each of these books has a small smyth sewn exposed spine wrapped board is on top, and bottom of the book. What’s happening here is, we’re actually staining the spine. All four sides of the book might be orange coloured. All four sides might be blue or green. It’s called staining on all four sides. Many shops that do hard back book binding, can stain on three sides of the open sheets, but they have difficulty staining, the exposed side (spine). As usual if you want something unique, hard to produce, communicative, memorable… Please give us a call, thank you.

Edge Paint: Where Tradition Meets Innovation in Book Design
In the world of bookbinding and publishing, there’s a delicate balance between tradition and innovation. The artistry and craftsmanship of creating books, especially those with gilded or stained edges, are deeply rooted in tradition. But what if we told you there’s a unique and innovative twist that’s redefining the way we think about book design? Enter Edge Paint, a creative technique that’s turning heads and leaving a lasting impression on readers.
Breaking Free from Tradition
Traditionally, books, particularly cherished texts like Bibles, are adorned with gilded or stained edges on the three sides of open pages. The timeless elegance of gold and silver accents has been a hallmark of these special books. But Edge Paint takes this age-old tradition and infuses it with a fresh perspective.
A Unique Approach
What makes Edge Paint truly distinctive is the careful attention to the small, Smyth-sewn exposed spine wrapped board that adorns both the top and bottom of the book. This innovative approach allows for the spine of the book to be stained as well, creating a cohesive and visually captivating effect that defies convention.
A Symphony of Colors
Edge Paint opens up a world of possibilities. With this technique, you’re not limited to just one or two sides of the book. Instead, you can opt to stain all four sides. Imagine a book with all sides painted in a striking orange, a calming blue, or a deep and rich green. This practice, often referred to as “staining on all four sides,” introduces a new level of creativity and customization to book design.
A Rare Skill
It’s essential to note that not all bookbinding shops can master the art of Edge Paint. While many can skillfully stain three sides of open sheets, the exposed side, or spine, poses a unique challenge. Edge Paint, however, confronts this challenge head-on, offering a solution that pushes the boundaries of what’s possible in the world of bookbinding.
