Making an Impact: Pop-Ups in Promotional Products

When you think of a pop-up insert, a children’s book might be the first thing that comes to mind. But pop-ups can also be a creative way to make a promotional piece more interactive, memorable, and eye-catching. Recently, we were approached with an unusual challenge: create a pop-up within a saddle-stitched promotional brochure.

Pop-Ups Aren’t Just for Children’s Books

The Challenge

The design called for a four-page section with a pop-up. Making the pop-up itself was no problem—we knew we could produce it. The challenge came when it needed to be incorporated into a saddle-stitched book.

A conventional four-page pop-up section doesn’t work with saddle stitching because you cannot stitch directly through the fold of the pop-up. So, we had to rethink the construction.

Thinking Outside the Fold

The solution was to create a three-panel piece that could accommodate the pop-up while still being automatically fed through a conventional saddle stitcher. By incorporating six pages with three panels, the finished brochure maintains a conventional appearance from the outside. Inside, however, the additional panels create more space for information while allowing the pop-up to take centre stage.

A Pop-Up with Possibilities

This project was a great example of how an unusual format can lead to an innovative finishing solution. We can also add clips along one, two, or three sides, or tip in a card in line with the rest of the project.

The result? A promotional piece that doesn’t just deliver information—it gives the reader something to interact with and remember.
