Multi Cavity Box

I think this piece is fascinating.  When I first saw this, I thought it was a giant book, but as you can see it is a multi-cavity box.  It took us awhile to figure out how to produce this complex box which requires various board thickness, somewhat extensive die-cutting, hand wrapping…the time required to make one in a production run of say 500 is substantial.  Obviously this piece is very, very functional; highly unusual and memorable.  When one considers all the “cavities” housing the books, the ease of removing and replacing the books, the ease of book presentation and the tidy way everything “comes together”, this piece is remarkable.  If you need something “different” to house a number of books similar to this piece…call us!  We can help.

Set-up Boxes

Set-up Boxes are an industry term to describe what people would describe as a chocolate box.  In the world of print (other than corrugated boxes), there are two kinds of boxes…set-up boxes and folding cartons (boxes).  The latter for example is the “box” that holds a tube of toothpaste.  This style of “folding carton” or box is collapsible, and the cost is 99.99% cheaper than a set-up box!  One problem with set-up boxes besides the cost is that when shipped, 98% of the bulk is air.

The set-up box style that I’m featuring today is collapsible!  This box style is more expensive than a regular set-up box…but because it is collapsible, shipping bulk is reduced very substantially.  Collapsible set-up boxes are just as durable as regular set-up boxes.  The user in many instances is more inclined to keep a collapsible box than the regular style.  These collapsible boxes come in almost as many sizes as regular set-up boxes do.  These boxes can be “wrapped” in coloured or printed paper, the manmade “wraps” that imitate leather etc.  Customers frequently find these boxes to be intriguing.  I’ve watched people flatten and erect the boxes two or three times in one sitting!

Zig-zag folded covers on perfect bound books

Zig-zag folded covers on perfect bound books are becoming more common.  The vast majority of these covers are heavier stocks; usually 12 point or thicker.  The fold is short at the face, because if the folded cover is flush, the binding price goes through the roof!  The reason for this is that the finished book cannot be trimmed because trimming would cut off the fold on the panel.  When the folded cover is flush, the book without the cover must be bound and trimmed at the face and then passed through the binder again to apply the cover!  We can now produce books with three or four or five panel covers!  I am continually hearing the market…give me something different…something memorable…something that engages the customer…something that sells more effectively.

One of the answers to these constant questions is “multiple panels” perfect bound book covers.

Rollabind

This binding style has different copyrighted names such as Rollabind, Rolobind, Button bind…and others.  The process is not patented! With the exception of a metal ring binder, there is no other binding system in the world that allows the user to add and subtract sheets! The “buttons” come in sizes up to 1” and in about 20 different colours.  If you order black or white your order will be done quickly. Any other colour might take weeks waiting for the buttons.

We did a project once requiring 10,000 bound the “Rollabind” style.  Each month we punched an additional 10,000 new sheets that were sent to 10,000 retail outlets.  Each outlet was instructed to remove a certain page number and replace it with the new page (updated prices).  Of course, the removal and adding sheets required no machine(s).  The process ran flawlessly for months.  If you want something different, think Rollabinding, something to add or remove sheets with, think Rollabinding.

Swiss/Euro Binding

This product is called Swiss/Euro binding.  As shown, the book bound in this style can be bound with tape, exposed glue, flat wire stitching, side thread sewing or Smyth sewing.  The distinguishing feature of these books is that the spine of the cover is not glued or attached to the spine. When the book is opened, the cover “falls off” the spine. The cover is only glued to the back of the book!  Why do people want this style…beats me.  Is it the novelty of the style, the fact that the book may lay flatter in a small percentage of this style?  With adage “the customer is always right”, we will bind this style if that is what you want.

Pre-printed Perfect Bound Book

The books I pictured here and shown in the video, is a process that is printed on the press sheets during the normal printing process. The printing could be either offset or digital. If you want a book that is case bound or perfect bound, that is “printed”, on the head, face and tail; talk to us. We’ll explain to you how to position pattern or marks on different panels. It won’t affect your print running cost.

I believe that books with a printed, head, face and tail with patterns or titles or names are very memorable, highly unusual, customer engaging and cost effective. As I’ve said frequently, a genius is someone who knows the difference between a fad and a trend! Is this a trend or a fad.

Box Liners

As shown in this video there are three different styles of box liners.  I can’t say which is the most common but the following is something you should be aware of.  Of the three kinds of liners 1. Die-cut paper 2. Foam 3. Vacuumed formed plastics, die-cut paper is the fastest, by far the cheapest, most environmentally friendly of the three processes, it allows for more detailed colourful and precise graphics.

The printed die-cut paper is something that printers are obviously much more aware of than foam or vacuumed formed plastic. Usually when we’re commissioned to do a box job with a liner, we do a mock-up and/or test different materials.  If the client wants foam there, are different textures colours and pliability of the foam.  For vacuumed forming, because there’s different gauges or thickness of plastics, we sometimes test to see which thickness holds the product appropriately.

A box with a liner with a product in the liner has a much more positive response from the consumer/user than a box with no liner that has a product loosely “banging around.”  If you need boxes made, along the liners, give us a call.  We can help!  We do these jobs regularly.

Pop-ups

This week’s focus is pop-ups.  As our video, shows pop-ups almost universally elicit a positive response from a user.  Our present day, jaded consumers, think they’ve seen it all, so graphic designers and printers need to work a little smarter to build an emotional connection through the printed image.  When your client’s message must be noticed it is essential to have a printed product that sets the product apart from every day “promotional stuff.”  In my opinion one of the most effective formats is an interactive brochure than “pops-up” when opening!  Experts tell us that physical motion drives buying emotions.  Interactive pop-ups fold does indeed trigger interest and this helps drive emotional connections.

Basic 4-page: The 4-page pop-up fold brochure is easy to plan and produce and can be used as a standalone brochure or incorporated into perfect bound and saddle stitched products. A notable design characteristic of the basic 4-page style is the “missing corner” when closed.

Multiple-panel: This design is where the pop-up is incorporated into a multi-panel gate, accordion or roll-folded piece. Properly designed, the multiple-panel style will temporarily hide the missing corner when fully closed and create intrigue as the piece unfolds.

Concealed corner: This double thick, glued-concealed corner design is considered the premium pop-up style because the missing corner is permanently concealed, completely hiding the pop-up image when closed.

Basics: Pop-up folds are interactive diecut pieces that automatically “pop-up” when opened

Benefits: Printed products containing pop-up folds drive emotion, and emotion helps drive desired behavior.

Variants: A concealed corner pop-up is an extra backing panel formed by a double parallel fold to conceal the missing corner in a standard pop-up design.

Max & mins: Max pop-up width is nine inches. The height of the pop-up (from the bottom of the “V” to the top of the pop-up) cannot be higher than the final folded width of the piece or the pop-up will stick out of the side of the product when folded.

P.S. Angled perforations are necessary. Choose a stock between 6 and 10 points. Perforation depth is always important, but especially so on thin or thick stock. Intricate die-cut patterns could impart feeding of material, reducing production speed and increasing waste.

Canadian Binding

Years ago I heard the expression “Canadian Binding”, but I took no notice.  I’ve had since come across requests to bind books with the “Canadian Binding” style, so I investigated further and found that “Canadian Binding” style is something we have been producing for decades!  As pictured, a “Canadian Binding” style consist of wire-o binding that has a three panel or wraparound cover.  Simply, the wire-o binding can be seen only on the inside back cover.  This binding method allows for printed spine to be shown on a bookshelf.  The “Canadian Binding” style allows for the wire-o binding element to be hidden except for when the book is open.

Like all wire-o binding the “Canadian Binding” style allows for mixed stocks for pages, mixed page sizes, fold outs, split binding or two or three colours of wire-o biding in one book.  The “Canadian Binding” style of wire-o binding style allows designers lots of room for creativity and innovation.  The “Canadian Binding” style, wire-o binding, can have solid printed cover such as 16 point or 20 point, (or in some cases lighter) stock, or the cover can be case wrapped…most often with film laminated litho printed paper or cloth or man-made material which can be foil stamped or debossed/embossed.

Giant Casebound books

I did an Eblast some months ago about “Giant Casebound books.”  I don’t repeat topics unless use of a video displays a product more effectively or we’ve changed some of the parameters, enlarged sizes, etc…  Since our last Eblast about giant casebound books we can now smyth sew signatures 20 inches wide!

As shown in the video and pictures, giant casebound books/hardback books are incredibly memorable, distinctive, effective and a means to convey the author’s message increasingly.  We’re seeing more varieties in the binding add-ons such as colour coordinated headbands, coloured endpapers and ribbons.  We’re seeing a greater demand for coloured or stained edges…much more creative additions to a giant hardback/casebound book.
